UNWRITTEN RULES

Calligraphy / Graffiti Series (1996–ongoing)

Rooted in his early experience as a graffiti artist, this series explores writing as a visual and physical gesture. Steve Lecru develops personal alphabets and a fluid approach to calligraphy and lettering, moving between control and improvisation. Through layered words, symbols, and talisman, like forms, his compositions transform writing into rhythm, movement, and abstract expression.

Emerging from the contrast between a multicultural French environment and a classical education, his practice began as a coded language, a way to mark space and identity. From early exchanges of handwritten messages to painting on urban walls, writing became both personal expression and visual performance.

Influenced by artists such as Futura 2000 and Shaken, as well as Arabic and Chinese calligraphy, this body of work combines instinct, discipline, and flow. Meaning is no longer carried by words themselves, but by the energy of the line, the tension of gesture, and the rhythm of composition.
