SACRED CLASH

A traditional Chinese landscape painting featuring mountains, trees, and buildings. Overlaid with colorful abstract shapes in red, blue, yellow, and black, with Chinese calligraphy and red seals in the upper right corner.

Revisited Chinese Landscapes (2017–ongoing)

Steve Lecru transforms traditional Chinese landscapes into contemporary compositions by layering graffiti, doodles, and spontaneous marks over printed classical works. His approach blends discipline and improvisation, merging the rules of classical Chinese painting with the immediacy and rebellious energy of street art.

Shaped by years living in China, Steve creates a dialogue across time with masters such as Guo Xi (c.1020–1090) and Ma Yuan (c.1160–1225). Influenced by artists like Basquiat, he paints with instinct and continuous flow, connecting to tradition while challenging it.

For viewers, this series invites reflection on cultural identity, heritage, and cross-cultural dialogue. It captures the rhythms, energy, and textures of everyday life in China through the perspective of a French artist navigating a living tradition.
